Dodgers @ Cardinals June 8, 2025: Kershaw starts as Dodgers look to avoid sweep and maybe even get a hit with runners in scoring position

The rough times for the Dodgers continued yesterday, as they were shut out before the top of the ninth and gave up a walk-off in the bottom for their fourth loss in the last six games. The Dodgers went 0-12 with runners in scoring position after going 1-13 on Friday (with the one not even scoring a run). They Moriyama’d their run in the ninth after Shohei Ohtani scored from third on a wild pitch strikeout, but lost to put them in danger of a sweep today. They’ve also managed to not take advantage of San Diego losing three of four, and entering today’s game only sit a game up on the Padres before heading to Petco for a three-game set starting Monday.

Clayton Kershaw makes his fifth start of the season and is still searching for his first decision. Last time out, Kershaw was given a four-run bottom of the first and the Dodgers tried their darndest to get him through five to qualify for a win. Max Muncy made a one-out error, and Kershaw got a second out but allowed a double and a single (with Kershaw a bit slow to cover first) to give the Mets a 5-4 lead. The Dodgers did come back to win on a Freddie Freeman double, but man was it frustrating to see them leave Kershaw in too long like the good old days. Kershaw’s only struck out eight batters and issued nine walks in his 15 2/3 innings, which is extremely unKershaw-like. He has struggled in his career against Nolan Arenado, who bats cleanup for the Cardinals tonight. Arenado has a career .879 OPS against Kershaw and has five homers, which is tied with Christian Walker for the most homers against him (in more than twice as many ABs, v glad Walker is out of the division).

While Kershaw makes his 434th career regular season start, Cardinal starter and No. 10 prospect Michael McGreevy makes his fourth. He made four appearances last season (three starts) and made one relief appearance in a double-header earlier this season. So far he’s been good in the Majors, with five runs and 17 hits allowed in 28 2/3 innings. McGreevy came on in the fourth with one out and the bases loaded against the Mets back in May, got a strikeout and a lineout and then tossed five more shutout innings with only one hit and one walk allowed. He posted a 2.78 ERA in 55 innings at AAA and has been very stingy with the walks dating back to his UCSB days. McGreevy walked 31 batters with 194 strikeouts in three seasons as a Gaucho and walked 126 with 443 strikeouts in 510 career innings in the minors.

Andy Pages sits with Teoscar Hernandez back in the lineup after the off day yesterday. Hyeseong Kim starts in center.

A minor update on Tony Gonsolin, who hit the IL yesterday with a right elbow issue.

His UCL is in tact, so hopefully this points to the injury not ending his season at least. He was lined up to go Tuesday in San Diego, but that’s TBD with Dustin May starting tomorrow and Justin Wrobleski getting the ball in the finale.

First pitch is scheduled for 11:15 AM PT and will be shown on SportsNet LA.
